national home garden club plant trials

Anthony Tesselaar International

Since 2005, Tesselaar USA has been working with the National Home Garden Club and their "Member Tested" program

To date, over 1,000 Tesselaar Plants have been sent to NHGC members for trialing in their home gardens.  Some trials are for 1-2 years only, while others are longer term 3-5 year programs.  Tesselaar products consistently receive high marks for their easy-care and growth habits; all have received the NHGC Seal of Approval.

The most recent trials have been for the Next Generation Flower Carpet roses,  including Flower Carpet ‘Amber, ‘Pink Supreme' and ‘Scarlet.   Here's what the NHGC Members have to say about these roses

This Flower Carpet Pink Supreme is very strong and holds up during bad rain and wind.  I would have never considered buying a rose, but it was given to me as a gift.  I would love to purchase more to line my yard with.  Even my neighbors have commented on how beautiful they are.

Sherry K., Rochester NY

My Flower Carpet Scarlets are absolutely wonderful.  The multiple blooms measure several inches across.  Roses are bigger than last year and leaves are green and shiny. I have compliments constantly.

(This came in from Barbara at the end of the season): I thought you might be interested in knowing that since Ike came through this area and then temperatures turned warm; my roses are with new growth.  Last year’s scarlets have grown so much they crawled up to the top of the wall and with this new growth, are now up to my shoulders. Everyone is commenting and asking about them.  We have a beautiful wall of red!

B. Nova., Conneautville, PA

I planted them, fertilized, watered and sat back and watched.  I did not have to touch them again and they’re beautiful! (FC Scarlet)

Christine M.,  Girard, PA

My Flower Carpet Scarlets began blooming on June 14th and have been continuous since then!  This is a very pretty and well-behaved roe.  The bloom color is fabulous, the leaves are well shaped and dark green, and the petals are tight and well formed.  I definitely have recommended the Flower Carpet Rose to friends and people who have toured my gardens.

Carol R.,   Fitzwilliam, NH

It is mid-July (’07) and my other rose bushes are fading and being eaten by bugs. The Flower Carpet (Scarlet) is blooming profusely, leaves are a vibrant green and there is little to no insect damage!  This is an excellent, top-notch plant. These plants were very prolific bloomers last summer - I can't wait to see them in bloom again!

Annette F.,  Altamont, NY

Flower Carpet Scarlet flowered with beautiful small roses.  It is a no-care rose.  I basically followed the instructions on the label and left it alone.  It is growing and flowering very nicely and not a bother at all.  I highly recommend this rose for anyone that is busy, with little time for gardening and yet hopes for wonderful results.  I typically have poor luck with roses, but these are doing great! I find this to be a wonderful, carefree, beautiful plant.

Mary Anne M.,  Clinton, CT

Japanese beetle damage was significant within my garden, however the Japanese beetles left my Flower Carpet roses relatively untouched. My other plants are not tolerating the heat and drought as well as my Flower Carpet roses are. The Flower Carpet roses are relatively hands off and a significant addition to my garden.  I receive compliments about my Flower Carpets from friends and passers by on a regular basis. I decided to plant the AMBER Flower Carpet roses in a trouble area of my yard that is drought prone portion. I am a now a real fan of the drought tolerant Amber  Flower Carpet Rose. Pink Supreme Roses provide beautiful abundant flowers.  I believe the Pink  Supreme out performs my other roses. Pink Supreme is definitely a 5 out of 5 and is one of my favorite plants to enjoy in my yard.

Vincent J.,   Morgantown, WV

I have tried several times to grow roses but I never was very successful.   I just planted the Flower Carpet rose (Scarlet) and that was it.  They grew fast and have beautiful petite blooms.  We are in the midst of a drought and they are still growing strong and I only water about once a week.  They’re also bug resistant.  I look forward to buying  more.

C. Dunahugh, Boonsboro, MD

This is a beautiful rose (FC Scarlet).  It is a prolific bloomer and it is easy to take care of even in a container. The blooms are prolific and they are very attractive. Even in a container, they make a wonderful addition to any garden.

Paul S., Philadelphia, PA

Flower Carpet Amber blooms are rich in color, small but pretty.  I would definitely recommend this rose to my friends.

Lynn L.,   Richmond, Virginia

These Flower Carpet roses are tough!  No diseases and one even grew in a partly shaded area. the flowers are beautiful and the plant flowers prolifically and stood up to Maryland’s Zone 7 heat and humidity!

Tricia D.,  Lanham, MD

The (FC Scarlet) roses are easy to grow and the blooms seem endless. They look beautiful in my garden and did not wilt when we had a dry spell.

Matty L., Topping, VA

The Flower Carpet Amber goes through some interesting color changes as the roses open. Very pretty when in bloom.

Pink Supreme These roses are beautiful and they are low to the ground so great ground cover. They are also very easy to care for as they practically do it on their own. A+++ product. Absolutely beautiful.

Enid C.,   Dry Fork, VA

I’m very happy with this rose: 1)It looks good in my garden. 2)It was dog tested and did very well.

K. Oren,  McComb, OH

Pink Supreme Flower Carpets are very beautiful and they make your garden look nice as well. If anyone loves flowers they would be very pleased with them, simply because of their beauty.

D. Ayers, Ithaca, NY

I received a lot of complements on the plants . They are very showy. The pink really stands out in my garden.  I am very happy with them. I don't have to give them back do I ? :)

M. Takacs,  Oregon, OH

Flower Carpet Pink Supreme is as maintenance free as it gets.  Great for me!  I have 10 month old and very little time but the rose performs wonderfully.

I am very pleased with all of my Flower Carpet roses. The foliage on my Flower Carpet roses (Amber) are better than the other brands I am growing. I would absolutely recommend them to my friends.

T. Cooley,   Floral, AR

Amber   They look great!!!! Tons of flowers, blooming more than any of my other roses, and the foliage is beautiful and lush green. They are beautiful! They have such great color and require nothing to keep them growing! On a scale of 1-5 with 5 being best, I give them a 5+5!

C. Booth,  Tucker, GA

Even  in the summer heat and humidity of Charleston area, these Flower Carpet Scarlet plants did very well  and have performed way beyond what I could have imagined.

Cheryl W., Mt. Pleasant, SC

Flower Carpet Scarlet do well in sandy soil, even with the drought and water restrictions in  effect.

Robin H.,  Boynton Beach, FL

Even with Southern Florida water restrictions of 1 day a week watering, my FC Scarlet plants have shown very little signs of stress and have grown to almost 2 feet across (rec’d as bare root).

Steve Z. Hollywood, FL

FC Pink Supreme was easy to plant, has grown tremendously without too much care, and is beautiful. These roses are a wonderful addition to any garden. I am enjoying them immensely and would recommend them to any gardener out there because they are simple to care for and beautiful plants.

M. Smith, Floral City FL

I would recommend this Flower Carpet [Pink Supreme] because once it was planted, the work was literally done. Tons of flowers!!!

Kris Dean, Charlotte NC

This rose bush is the easiest one I've ever grown.  Covered with beautiful pink roses.

Given our extremely wet spring and June, we’re delighted with Scarlet.  They’re all in excellent condition, lots of buds and blooms, no insect issues and no diseases, even with the extended wet season.

T. Short, Gilmer, TX

They grow larger every day and the blooms are absolutely gorgeous, even with the hot Texas sun!  I definitely recommend these roses (Flower Carpet Scarlet)

Karyl H., Justin, TX

My Flower Carpet roses have bloomed better and are bushier than other roses that I’m growing.      They have performed better all around and been less stressed by the drought.  The Pink Supreme, Scarlet, and Amber have performed much better overall than any of the other roses I have in my garden.  Because of back problems I have this summer I was not as up on watering and fertilizing as I usually am.     The Flower Carpet roses didn't seem to be bothered by this and continued to bloom well. Amber – I love the color and it doesn’t seem to be bothered by heat and drought.

Pamela W.,   Gilmer, TX

All of my Scarlet roses have made it through the summer and have started filling out nicely. I have had 2 of my neighbors stop and compliment me on my "beautiful roses" this summer. I have to be honest with them and tell them it's the roses not anything I've done. These roses are very easy to grow. I just water them and hope for the best and I have not been disappointed.

I’d highly recommend these, and in fact, I've told the neighbors about FC Pink Supreme and where they can purchase the roses.

Debra B.    Oklahoma City, OK

Amber Flower Carpets are really hardy and growing and blooming  well and (on a scale of 1-5, with 5 being excellent), I’d rank them as a 5!  I would recommend them to my friends in a heart beat.

Sheryl R.    Camp Verde, AZ

My 10 Flower Carpets (Pink Supreme, Amber and Scarlet) were the only ones to survive and recovered nicely from my armadillo attack on my rose garden – all of my other roses succumbed.  I am sorry the roses went through what they did, but it is a testament to their hardiness and vigor that they survived at all, let alone rebound and bloom so profusely the same year. I’ve recommended Flower Carpet to several people and am the envy of all my friends who have to wait until 2009 to purchase Flower Carpet Amber.

Carrie G.  Howe, OK

I am one of those people that recommend things, i.e.: doctors, stores, etc.  I will most definitely tell my friends about these (FC Pink Supreme) and I am about to go to their website so I can find a retailer near me - I will be buying more for my garden!!  I like their durability, rose production, ease of care, and bug resistance.

D. Clayton, Houston, TX

Considering the plants' rocky starts weather wise, I am thrilled with how they are growing and filling in a bare spot in

my planter.  Our spring was full of sun, snow and rain -- our summer has been mostly smoky (and therefore not full sun), but the plants look so healthy and lush!  I am very happy with them!!

I first placed the (Flower Carpet Pink Supreme) roses in containers as I was living in an apartment in Indianapolis, Indiana. They survived a move to Plano, Texas, where I placed them in the ground with a hardwood mulch in July during the hot summer. Neighbors were amazed at the number of blooms and their beautiful hot pink color. During the winter the plants lost leaves but leaves came out when weather warmed in late Feb and March. It is the first part of May and they are covered with beautiful hot pink blooms. The plants are planted about 2 feet apart and now cover about a five foot area. They have nice green leaves and seem to be disease free. It is a beautiful attraction to the area where they are planted. They get full sun all day.

C. Russell, Plano, TX

The plant (Flower Carpet Pink Supreme) when received has very strong root system. The best that I have ever seen. I have purchased more than a dozen roses from different sources (i.e. on line sites, catalogs or local garden centers to department store like Home Depot etc.). The compact size makes it idea for front border. They bloom freely, almost year round. Yet, it is truly carefree. I only watered them for the first two weeks when I planted them. Then they were by themselves. No spray of pesticide or fungicide was made during the growing season. The flowers are better looking than my single petal Knock Out rose. The site I planted them is full sun with late afternoon shadow and the soil is on a little heavy side.

My Flower Carpets Scarlets bloom more than other roses I’m growing.  I just love my Flower Carpets– they are absolutely tremendous!

Lori Dolan,   Lucan, MN

I’ve grown many roses in the past, and this variety (FC Scarlet) is the only disease and pest resistant rose I’ve known.  I am very happy with its performance.

Pamela S.,  Dover,  OH

My new Amber rose gets a 5 from me for making it through our tough summer . . . it is beautiful, great color, great shape.

Kathy S.,  Milwaukee, WI

These roses were definitely the easiest I’ve even grown and currently they are a joy to look at.  I’ve already recommended them to several people.  I also liked the free fertilizer packets and think it helped in getting my Flower Carpets quickly established.

Jennifer R.,  Allen Park,  MI

My Flower Carpets Pink Supreme were extremely HARDY--withstood 45 mph, 95 degree winds that withered everything around. (It lost leaves and thought I'd lost the plants) but made a COMEBACK in just a week and look just glorious now.  Nothing else I had that I'd just bought at nursery made it. Very easy maintenance and beautiful blooms! The fragrance is wonderful!

J. Sturm,   Racine, WI

FC Scarlet’s blooms were beautiful, and the shoots were very healthy. It made roses I had next to them look pathetic.  I’m very impressed with this product and will be looking for more of them next spring in local stores.

Roger C.,  Montville, OH

I’ve never grown roses before growing Flower Carpet Scarlet and was very pleased how well they grew.  The blooms were many and beautiful.   Lots and lots of blooms in only the first year.  I would recommend these to anyone.  I like that they are low growing.

Sue H.,  Tiro, OH

I would definitely recommend this Flower Carpet rose. It was easy to plant and has not been destroyed by all the rains yet.  It is still full of blooms.

L. Poznars,  St. Charles, MO

I liked the pink color all summer long.  When some of my other rose bushes didn't make it because of bugs or weather this one thrived.

My FC are blooming and blooming - everything else just bloomed quickly then stopped! I am so surprised at the Flower Carpet roses in general.  The Pink Supremes are just covered with blossoms.  General size is getting close to 2' x 2'.  Amazing...for me - I have roses 5-7 years old that barely come back each season!  I’m loving these roses, especially since I do not do much of anything with them...water, cover with mulch during winter and dead head (but not much!)  Amber – pretty plant and I would recommend it to my friends, especially in this area.  They’re just great!  Pink Supreme – Excellent plant  - my favorite of the three, loads of blooms.  FC Scarlet are blooming and blooming - everything else bloomed quickly then stopped!

Becky D.  Ignacio, CO

The FCs are looking much better than my other roses (various varieties).  I also fertilized my other roses at the same time and gave them the same (or more) attention than I gave the Flower Carpets . I will definitely add additional Flower Carpets to my collection.  An interesting observation--the deer have left the Flower Carpets alone whether planted in the ground or in a pot.  They have happily munched my other roses regardless of the type of repellant used-garlic, dogs, screaming gardener, flash tape, blood meal, etc.

These roses are some of the easiest to grow.

Victoria R.    Bonner, MT

I still have 8 of the 9 Flower Carpet Scarlet plants I received last year and they are gorgeous – even the deer didn’t eat them! I’d like to replace all of my other rose varieties with the Flower Carpets. They are beautiful, hardy and low maintenance.

Amber - healthy and nice looking and the foliage is also nicer than other shrub & tea roses that I have. They are a wonderful rose. They are also very low maintenance which is extremely important to me.

Lisa D. C.    Elbert, CO

I would recommend Flower Carpet Scarlet groundcover rose to anyone who loves roses or red. The planting instructions were simple to follow.  I planted in a container on my patio with the intention of transplanting them later but now I’m not sure – the plant/leaves are a lush glossy green and the flowers are beautiful with many buds.  It’s easy to grow with overwhelming results.

S. Livingwood, Stockton, CA

Northern CA  & Pacific Northwest

We have many roses and they're not as healthy as the FCs; some have powdery mildew or rust, but FC’s have none of these ailments. We’ve had lots of high heat and the Flower Carpets are performing wonderfully!  The Flower Carpet Scarlet and Flower Carpet Pink Supremes that I planted in 2007 are now very well established now and have a home forever. Thanks for such healthy and wonderful plants.

Regan Jones,  Citrus Heights, CA

Everything about this little rose [FC Pink Supreme] is great. It has buds on it already and we have had very little sun this year. It looks like it will bloom even better than my established roses.

Robyn Farmer,  Monterey CA

The [Pink Supreme Flower Carpet] roses have survived the deer. The plants look healthy, without powdery mildew so common in our cool coastal clime. They have weathered through a few frosts and still are putting out early buds!

L. Cook,  Eureka, CA

In comparing my other roses to Flower Carpets, there’s not  nearly the amount of blooms and none as clean as the Flower Carpets. Other roses that I grow do not have the lush, shiny green leaves.  There is virtually no black spot or mildew even on the ones I have in less air circulated areas.  They seem to be very deer resistant.  This year I have 2 does and 5 fawns that live on my property.  I have another doe and fawn who are around often and several others in and out.  I’ve observed over the years that in their first year the fawns will try anything.  Almost like they don’t know what it might taste like so they’ll try it.  (too bad kids won’t do that huh?).  I have 15 Flower Carpet Roses (Pink Supreme, Scarlet and Amber).  Four are completely out in the open in an area the deer browse regularly.  None have been browsed more than a twig here and there.  Three are in small cages that I’ve let the branches grow out of – these are the Ambers and since they’re small and struggling I did not want to risk the deer ruining the plant.  They are not browsed at all.  The others are all fenced in a heavily browsed area.  They have been nipped at slightly when they send branches out of the wires but just a leaf or two. All my other roses are taken to the ground when they decide to go for it.

Catie  A.,    McMinnville, OR

Flower Carpet Scarlet is a great plant with beautiful blooms and color. It almost takes care of itself – plus the deer seem to leave it alone in  my garden.

Jyames H.,    Port Orchard, WA

These plants (FC Scarlet) are beautiful, very healthy and very easy directions too.  Plus, easy to grow and very little care!  I would love to have more of these plants and plan on buying more this spring.

Jerry F.,  Eugene OR

These are wonderful roses!  I grew them (FC Scarlet) in containers and they out performed my rose beds.  We have over 40 roses so I was amazed how well they did.  Even being neglected at times, they bounced back and were full of blooms.  Simply beautiful ad easy to care for!

Gina D.,  Portland OR

As far as roses go, I highly recommend these (Flower Carpet Pink Supremes) for our wet climate.  They did remarkably well as far as powdery mildew & black spot goe - two very common rose problems for our region (Pacific Northwest).

Beth T., Pacific Northwest

It is by far the easiest rose I ever had to take care of. It had blooms into late fall/Dec.and started blooming again in Feb.

Rudy H.   (Zone 8/9 but we still get snow. We had 6 inches this year.)

Had to go to (a few) Home Depots before I got enough Volcano Pholx, but I am delighted. Also saw them at a specialty retailer in more colors in gallon size. Clearly they are very popular. Great product. Thanks very much. - S.I., Illinois
