Caruba® Black cordyline provides a strong contrast to other plants in the tropical garden.

Introduction

From the rich exotics of New Guinea comes an exciting new foliage plant, rich in color and compact in growth. Caruba® BLACK is a cordyline which creates garden magic with its vivid shiny purple-black foliage either planted on its own, or combined with other tropical plants. Outdoors, Caruba BLACK cordyline prefers warm to tropical climates, and in cooler climates it makes a wonderful patio feature or stunning indoor plant placed near a window.

Suggested Uses

Growth Habit

More compact than most other cordylines.

Plant Size

36 inches high and 15 inches wide in pots. Outdoors: grows to 24-48 inches high and 15-18 inches wide in sub-tropical and tropical gardens.

Flower Attributes

Cordyline do produce a pale purple flower however Caruba® BLACK is mainly grown for the shiny dark purple/black foliage.

36 inches tall in pots. 24-48 inches high outdoors.

Mature Width

15 inches wide in pots. 15-18 inches wide outdoors.

Hardiness

Keep away from frosts. Recommended for USDA zones 10 and 11 outdoors.

Flower Color

Pale purple flower.

Foliage

Shiny dark purple/black leaves.

Pruning/Pinching

Remove dead or damaged leaves as required.

Light Needs

Will tolerate low light conditions, however color is better with higher light levels.

Soil Needs

Keep soil lightly moist and do not overwater.

Water Needs

Ensure plants are kept moist.

Fertilizer

Controlled release fertilizer mixed with potting mix prior to potting.

Disease Tolerance

No major disease problems.

Pest Issues

No major pests.

Special Care

Requires protection from cold.

Special Notes

If indoors, place near a window for maximum color.
