less water, fewer chemicals, doing it right
Plants going through their extensive trials, checking flowering, disease tolerance, not for 2 years, but up to 5 years.
At Anthony Tesselaar International we’ve been operating with a sustainable approach for as long as we’ve been in business – 15 years. In fact, the basic premise behind what we do – dealing with easy to grow, easy care plants – is itself a contribution to a greener world.
In day-to-day terms, we manage and promote plants in all the world’s major horticultural markets. These plants are selected for their high-quality performance but they must also be straight-forward to grow, unlikely to become environmental weeds, and be able to thrive with less water and minimal chemicals. On top of this, our growers are local, supplying nearby markets which reduces the impact of transporting plants over long distances.
Our selections all have a low to no demand for pesticides and fungicides: we’re heavily involved in research and development designed to identify plant varieties which have improved tolerances, or cleaner methods of propagation and growing. We gather data from trial gardens worldwide, and it’s here that we confirm which plants require very little in the way of water or chemicals. We believe in defining appropriate water sources, uses and effective volumes, and as part of this we’re involved with WeatherTRAKŪ - a water saving device currently used in the USA to reduce excessive irrigation, (It’s also how we’ve accessed such accurate water-needs data on all our plants ensuring that they are low water users.)
Following on from this we’re also exploring clever and sustainable methods of grey water treatment.
We’ve been a key player in promoting public discussion of water conservation issues – offering the knowledge and experience gathered from our extensive global network to the boards of industry associations and through links to key Australian government departments.
In some ways, all this represents the way in which we’ve taken our personal green philosophies from home to work, putting in place all those small but important changes to reduce our impact, because we believe it adds up to make a difference. Of course our greatest contribution is the promotion of a greener, planted, planet.
